Identifying Pre-AI Lenses

  • Metal construction.
  • Solid aperture tab.
  • May have a scalloped focus barrel.

Identifying AI Lenses (Auto-Indexing)

  • Metal construction.
  • Aperture tab has two holes.
  • Two rows of aperture stops on the lens barrel, near the mount.
  • As far as I know, all AI lenses will have a rubber grip on the focus barrel.

G Lenses

  • Identified by the lack of aperture stops on the lens barrel and sleek modern appearance. Also, G lenses are marked with a ‘G’ after the max aperture on the lens.
  • Nikon’s latest lens in the F-mount series.
  • These G lenses always have auto-focus motors built in, so they are compatible with all Nikon DSLRs. Since they have no aperture ring, they cannot be used with some older Nikon SLRs (digital or film).
